What happened to SplashShopper?

Frank Neunemann Aug 29, 2014 06:00AM PDT

Dear sirs:

I am user of SplashShopper since it came out for the Palm platform and alway found indispensable. I currently use it on the iPhone (4s) and Mac (for the desktop counterpart), versions 3.1. I use iOS 7.1.2 and Mac OS X 10.9.4.

When I updated to version 3.2 (iPhone) disaster struck. All in all I took me several hours to get my data back in place again and still SplashShopper does not look as it used to look. On the iPhone the only view I get its sorted alphabetically, which makes absolutely no sense in the supermarket, when you need the option sorted "by aisle". There is no way to change this!

On the SplashShopper Desktop, Sync settings don't work, they won't show up at all and thanks to that I lost all SplashShopper data on my Mac after I replaced the damaged app version 3.2 with the old one on the iPhone...

Luckily I made a backup a few weeks ago, but as it turned out, restoring does not work reliably, as only part of the data were restored properly, after several attempts. It would have been very sad for me to lose all the data as it was built up during the years I used SplashShopper.

After getting the data back in place again I accidentally came across "Item" and "Delete unneeded" clicked--and without further warning all my data were gone again! This is a very dangerous menu item!

After restoring again (again after several attempts) I tried to find the iPhone app settings to get the correct sort order (by aisle) again. Nothing! No way to do something about it. I read your article about the "More" option, but it does not work at all on my iPhone. When tapping "More" the app seems to crash, but after a closer look SplashShopper is still running.

All in all using SplashShopper right now is a very frustrating experience! A so far very useful piece of software has gone downhill quality wise.

About 1 or 2 years ago I experienced something similar and had to manually update my iPhone in order to prevent updating SplashShopper automatically. Restoring data did work at that time, unfortunately I cannot remember the faulty version. I guess it was 3.02, but I am not sure.

Your product still its the best and most useful on the market by design, but it has become buggy and therefore a pain to use. Please do something about it.

We have received several reports of SplashShopper iPhone app version 3.2 crashing on launch for users that are updating from version 3.1. While we are not able to reproduce the issue yet, we decided to remove the app from the store until we could investigate and fix it, to prevent more users from having the problem.

If you have your data in the SplashShopper Desktop or if you are not concerned about reverting the data to the default sample lists, you can delete and reinstall the app from your iTunes desktop.

We apologize for the inconvenience and we will restore the app as soon as possible, and notify those interested.

Thanks for your patience. At long last, SplashShopper 4 is out for iOS. Due to the upgrade issues some people were having, we released this as a new app on the store so it won’t overwrite your old version.

You can get it on the App Store here:

We have set the price to FREE until 10/23 so that you can get this upgrade at no charge. After that it will be $1.99.

This version also fixes the problem of adding multiple users to the SplashShopper desktop user menu on sync. This version will add only one version and continue to sync with that user going forward.

Unfortunately, I missed the free upgrade window. More unfortunately, after buying the upgrade, I am still unable to sync with my Macbook Pro. The sync settings window still will not come up and when I synced, although the window that appeared said "synchronize" both of my custom lists were overwritten and all I have left are the default lists on both the computer and the phone.

Hi Raymond,

We’re still working on the Mac desktop app update to fix the sync settings dialog issue. I’ll let you know when it is ready.

If you have your customized lists in the SplashShopper desktop, export your list from the old user in SplashShopper desktop:

File menu > Export > SplashShopper vShop

Repeat for other lists that you need to transfer.

Download the new SplashShopper iOS app (if you have not already):

Then run the new iPhone app, and do a sync with the SplashShopper desktop.

Then switch the user in the SplashShopper desktop user menu to the new (properly working) device name.

Now import your vSH files, creating new lists. Then sync again.

If your data is in the old iOS app only, and you are able to run the old app, you can email the items to yourself to be imported into the new SplashShopper 4 app. Here’s how:

1. Open your old SplashShopper app
2. Select the list you want to transfer, and stay in the All items view
3. Tap the “mail” icon near the top of the screen (by the search icon)
4. Enter your own email in the to field and email it to yourself
5. Open the email when you receive it and tap the “All items” link to import into the new SplashShopper
6. Repeat for other lists if needed

We have a new build of the Mac desktop app that fixes the issue with not being able to open the Sync Settings dialog.

Please let me know if that doesn’t fix it.

I had at least 5 users on my desktop and the only way to eliminate them was to dump the app and repurchase, which doesn't seem right to me but syncing was a problem. So now I'm setting this up all over again and the sync setting don't work. The link in the response above is inactive. I'm working on a Mac. Any help you can give me would be great.
