SplashID on Linux (Wine) questions and suggestions

Al Womelsdorf Mar 15, 2015 01:27PM PDT

I have been running SplashID for many years, on devices ranging from Palm to Windows to Linux. A really great product I must say.

In previous versions (7.x and probably earlier) I have had generally good luck running SplashID under Wine. A recent problem when terminating has cropped up, but it is not really a big deal. Also, for those that don't want to use the Cloud sync, you can sync your device to your Linux system, but you typically will need to open UDP port 4998 and TCP port 5698 on your firewall for the device to detect and connect to the SplashID client (in the Linux system). As a side note I have seen this happen on Windows systems also, especially when multiple network interfaces are involved.

For some reason, however, the latest version 8 does not play well with Wine, and the central list of all your entries does not display at all. If you click in the empty area it will change the display on the right side to reflect the entry you selected, but still nothing (or almost nothing) will display in the center stack. I have identical systems for testing, and they will run version 7 correctly (except for the "exit" error), and will not run version 8. Apparently something has changed in the list management and display software. It would be nice to be able to use this new version if possible.

I know you do not officially support Linux/Wine, but to be honest the WEB client is not exactly up to the same standards as the desktop client, it seems to still have issues on Chrome, and for those of us that use Firefox it is non-existent.

Thanks for contacting us. As you said, we don’t support Wine, but we will continue to improve the web app going forward so that will probably be a good solution.

If not, version 7 is still a stable app that supports cloud sync, so you can use that for a while too.
